For all the advances of technology in the renaissance age of this World, it's conquests still stand no chance in competition with the power of magic. It's a fairly uncommon thing in this world, or at least, good magic is. The majority of magic found among the islands is rudimentary fair. It takes a skilled mind and hand to channel arcane or divine energies, and not just anyone on the street can do it.
Magic is more common depending on different races, Elves and dragons are inherently magical beings, and grasp more skill in the arts than perhaps a human would with less training.
There are three main subdivisions of Magic

White Magic
Spells drawing their power from the power of holiness are called white magic. It's not limited to simply 'healing magic' but more appropriately a synonym would be 'Holy Magic', magic calling on the power of gods and deities. In white magic, the spells are used mainly for healing and defense. Few offensive spells exist but they are primarily only effective against demons or undead.
However, the more powerful white magic can be cast only by those who serve the gods. White magic is not so much a skill like the other types of magic, so much as it is channeling the power of a divinity, becoming a tool through which holy or divine power is used THROUGH a being, rather than being used BY the being.
However, some healing magics are not necessarily considered 'White magic' and can be learned as a skill same as arcane magics.

Black Magic
Black magic calls on the power of spirits and demons, a skill a being is born with, and skill they train and hone and learn. Arcane magic such as this requires a high level of concentration, and the more powerful and well learned the caster, the stronger the spell will be. Knowledge in black magic is power. The more you know about the spell and where it's power comes from, the better you will be able to cast it.
Unlike white magic, were the power is channels through the being, arcane magic requires more core talent and skill, even if the power is being called or borrowed from a demon or spirit, unlike white magic, your knowledge is key. Without full understanding of a demon who's power is being borrowed, or full knowledge of the meaning of the incantation, the power of the spell suffers.
For example, anyone with magical skill who has learned it, can cast spell x
Someone who simply knows the incantation of spell x, will cast a far weaker spell x than a trained sorcerer who's practiced and knows that spell x draws it's power from demon y, and that the incantation was first discovered by sorcerer a.
The stronger the demon or spirit the magic draws its power from, the stronger and more difficult to control the spell will be.
Black magic gets it's name from the largely destructive and offensive nature of these spells, with few defensive and no healing spells in existence.

Spirit Magic
Spirit or, Elemental magic magic, is the general category given to spells which originate from the power of the spirits and elements of the earth. These spells are learned much like black magic, but instead of drawing power from any spirit, Spirit magic is simply the power of the caster. Some spells are inherently stronger or more powerful than other spells (and thus harder too control), but the main power of Elemental magic comes from the power of the caster. Stronger caster, stronger spell.
Fire Spells which use the spirit power of fire have fire's destructive nature. There are a variety of spells from those used against individuals, to those which can turn a wide area into a plain of fire. Fire spells also have the added effect of making things catch on fire.
Water Spells using the spirit power of water are the counterpart to spells which use the spirit power of fire. While fire spells use heat as a weapon, water spells use extremely low temperatures as a weapon. These spells use the power of water and all it's forms (ice, steam.)
Earth Earth spells call on the power of the spirits of the earth. Since the caster is usually in continual contact with the ground, he/she has more control over the effects of the spell. The one problem with earth spells is that they have no effect on airborne creatures.
Air These are spells which use wind spirit power and manipulate the atmosphere to blow away targets or create a barrier of air. These spells can also be used to give the caster the power of flight.
Shadow Shadow spells use of power of shadows darkness and night. Offensive spells can attack a targets shadow, defensive spells can create darkness, pull the caster into the shadows to safety or even manipulate the area around them to block out light.
Spirit These spells attack of defend the caster's or target's spirit. Without harming the physical body, offensive spirit magic can do damage to the mind, or vice versa.
